Do I need a letter of referral?
No, not necessarily, but a referral underscores the necessity of surgical treatment for the health insurance companies.
For acute injuries, you are welcome to come to us anyway. However, we strongly urge you to announce your visit by phone at 030-639 790 13 or by email at info@gorsler.berlin.
What happens at the day of the operation?
After you arrive at the Outpatient Surgery Center, you will briefly review the anesthesia with the anesthesiologist. You will accompany your daughter or son into the operating theatre, remain there until your child has fallen asleep, and then be asked to return to the waiting area. After the operation, your child will be taken to the recovery room, where you will be awaited to join them. At this point, your child will usually still be asleep but will soon wake up. Once your son or daughter has reliably woken up, typically in less than an hour, you will both go home. Beforehand, we will have given you detailed instructions regarding the further course of treatment, the necessary care, and follow-up appointments. If you have any questions that arise after returning home, you can email us at any time.

1. Outpatient Surgery Center Spichernstraße in Wilmersdorf, Spichernstr. 11, 10777 Berlin, +49 30 2129900, https://www.opz-berlin.de.

Why to perform surger at outpatient care and not in a hospital?
Many surgical procedures can be performed on an outpatient care basis. This is especially important for children. The length of stay for outpatient pediatric surgery is short, parents are always present, and the distances in the facilities are short. There is little disruption, people know each other, and the environment is friendly and welcoming.
Our Pediatric Surgery Clinic and the Outpatient Surgical Centers we use are no huge, impersonal machinelike facilities. Nevertheless, the quality is comparable to that of hospitals in every respect. Our clinic and the outpatient surgical centers are all certified facilities. The entire staff, both medical and nursing, are specially trained in working with children and possess proven expertise. The operating theatre, its equipment, anesthesia and ventilators as well as surgical instruments: Everything meets the same quality standards and hygiene requirements as in a hospital.
A selection of the surgeries we perform on an outpatient basis can be found under the "Our Services" tab. Further information can be found in the brochure of our association, the Professional Association of Practicing Pediatric Surgeons of Germany (BNKD).
Will my child suffer from pain after operation?
Your child should not experience any pain. At the operation we inject in addition to the usual pain medication the area of the procedure with local anesthetic. This local anesthetic should numb the surgical area for approximately 8 hours. If, contrary to expectations, your child does report pain later during the day, let them have pain killer, which we prescribed, in the dosage we specified before discharge. You can also find this information in the package insert inside the medication box. In any case, please provide your daughter or son with pain killer before she or he gets to sleep at night after the operation. It would be a shame if your child wakes up of pain at night because the effects of the pain medication had worn off. However, it is not uncommon for children to report no pain at all on the evening of the operation.
The best age for circumcision?
In our opinion, a circumcision for medical reasons should generally be performed as soon as recurring problems like infections of the forescin, pain at piing etc. arise. If circumcision is desired for cultural or religious reasons, our clear recommondation is, performing the procedure as early as possible – however, for anesthetic reasons not significantly earlier than the first birthday, because we use to do the procedure in general anasthesia which requires a certain degree of maturity.
When getting to eat around the operation?
Your child may drink clear, non-carbonated liquids such as still water and tea for up to two hours before the operation. Milk should be avoided for the last 4 hours before the scheduled surgery, no solid food for 6 hours. You will receive further instructions from the anesthesiologist before the scheduled surgery date. After the operation, an appropriate amount of time should have passed. Please contact the medical assistant in the recovery room regarding this matter when the time is right.
How long does the surgery take?
The duration of the operation depends on the procedure. However, our pediatric surgical procedures rarely last significantly longer than half an hour. If we do need more time, we will let you know in good time.
What needs to be done after a circumcision?
You can download and print a clear, illustrated guide under the link "Aftercare after circumcision". The brochure also contains information about aftercare and the healing process following the operation.
What´s to be considered in preparation for the surgery?
After scheduling the operation and having handed out the documents for the anesthesia, you please need to speak with the anesthesiologists.
If the operation will be performed in Wilmersdorf, please call there on the following day - the telephone number is on the yellow anesthesia form - and arrange an appointment for the informational discussion with the anesthesiologists. The phone call with the anaesthesiologist is usually done a few days before the scheduled operation.
If the operation will be performed in Reinickendorf, you need to show up there personally to talk with the anesthesiologists. The address and opening hours can be found in the documents we handed out to you. You do not need an appointment, just simply show up during the opening hours. Please bring the white anesthesia form - preferably already filled out - and the referral that we have issued to you.
Anyway, to the operation please bring all documents with you . Please note that you must also have signed the surgical consent form.
"Circumcision on request" for cultural or religious reasons
We are also happy to offer you circumcision for personal preference. The circumcision requested for religious or cultural reasons is not paid for by the health insurance, and you must bear the costs yourself.
